Case in point: this jaw-dropping metallic tiger beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) found resting on a cluster of green flower buds during tonight’s backyard perimeter walk. While they are known for their blinding speed during the day, the cool air of the night slows them down just enough for a macro lens to lock focus on their incredible structural colors.
A Masterclass in Structural Iridescence
Tiger beetles are legendary for their visual aesthetics, and this specimen shows exactly why they are a favorite among macro enthusiasts.
- The Prismatic Armor: Under the light, the beetle’s exoskeleton flashes a brilliant spectrum of metallic colors. Deep coppery reds and deep purples coat the center of the elytra (wing covers), which are framed by electric greens and neon blues along the margins and legs. Six distinct, cream-colored spots punctuate the back, breaking up its outline.
- The Face of a Micro-Monster: Pushing the magnification into a tight, front-facing macro stack reveals its terrifying hunting toolkit. The head is dominated by massive, dark, outward-bulging compound eyes that grant them exceptional vision. Directly below are its heavy, overlapping, sickle-shaped mandibles—complete with a white-masked base that contrasts sharply with its metallic face.
- Suburban Sentinels: Finding this level of apex micro-predator in a basic residential patch of bushes is a fantastic indicator of a healthy local micro-ecosystem. Tiger beetles require an abundant supply of smaller insects to feed on, proving that even small, fragmented green spaces right outside our doors host intense food webs.

There is no better way to finish a scouting session than with a subject that reflects every color of the spectrum. The intense patterns of this tiger beetle offer the perfect contrast to the strict twig mimicry and soft mantis textures logged earlier on the same walk.
