A leaf gall isn’t created by the plant by choice—it’s engineered by tiny micro-arthropods (frequently gall midges in the family Cecidomyiidae, gall mites, or psyllids):

  • Chemical Hijacking: A female insect pierces the leaf blade to deposit an egg. Along with the egg, she secretes specialized chemical signals (or the hatching larva does) that override the plant’s normal cellular growth commands.
  • Self-Building Nurseries: Instead of rejecting the intruder, the leaf responds by swelling and rapidly growing tissue around the developing larva. This forms a smooth, protective green capsule complete with an interior food supply.
  • Symmetrical Domes: Under diffuse flash lighting, the smooth, reflective curves of these galls stand out sharply against the darker green blade and natural venation of the leaf.
