When you give a 12-year-old the freedom to hunt for macro subjects at his own pace, he starts spotting structural marvels that most hikers walk right past. While trekking back along the loop toward the Palmetum headquarters, the forest floor held one last fungal masterpiece tucked right beside the main trail.
Sprouting from a piece of buried decaying wood was this incredible five-tiered stack of stalked polypores (Polyporaceae, genus Microporus).
My son spotted this miniature natural pagoda, crouched down low with the backup Canon EOS 60D, and composed a perfectly balanced vertical macro frame that easily stands out as one of his best shots of the day.
Vertical Stacking and Concentric Symmetry
While individual Microporus caps are common across Bornean understory leaf litter, finding a clean, multi-layered vertical cluster like this is a treat for macro photographers:
- Multi-Tiered Architecture: The five fan-shaped caps spiral upward like steps, creating a natural vertical lead-in line that fills the frame beautifully.
- Chestnut Zonation: Under diffuse lighting, each cap displays warm tones of amber, copper, and deep chestnut-brown, arranged in fine concentric growth rings.
- Bright Margin Accent: Every single tier is finished with a crisp, pale white edge marking its active growing boundary, popping brightly against the earthy soil and decaying leaves.
A Stellar End to the Kubah Family Trek
Watching my son lock down focus on this intricate, five-level polypore stack was the perfect capstone to our family hike through Kubah National Park. Even with high ridge winds keeping insects tucked away and our main camera gear left behind, his eye for forest composition turned this trial run into a deep, rewarding collection of fungal and botanical macro entries for Minutia Flux.
