Perennial Polypores: The Silent Sculptors of the Dipterocarp Trunk

When hiking through Kubah National Park with young children, you learn to look for massive, static subjects that stay put while the family takes a breather. While small, fast-moving insects require split-second setup, the rich fungal diversity of Borneo’s rainforests offers incredible, immovable architecture to focus on along the trail.

Protruding like a thick, woody ledge from a hardwood trunk along the Selang loop was this impressive perennial bracket fungus (Hymenochaetaceae, likely Phellinus sp.).

Unlike delicate soft mushrooms that pop up and dissolve within days, these heavy shelf fungi are built to last for years, slowly decomposing dead heartwood and recycling essential nutrients back into the forest soil.

Reading the Growth Rings

A close macro view of a bracket fungus reveals a surprisingly detailed story of seasonal forest history.

  • Concentric Ridges: The top surface of the cap is heavily textured, featuring cracked, weathered crusts and distinct concentric ridges. Each ridge represents a cycle of growth, showing how the fungus expands outward season after season.
  • The Fertile Underside: Looking underneath the bracket reveals a smooth, creamy-white to tan pore layer. Instead of traditional gills, polypores release millions of microscopic spores from thousands of tiny, densely packed vertical tubes lining this bottom surface.
  • Forest Backbone: These thick fungal shelves act as vital micro-habitats within the rainforest. A single bracket fungus can house specialized darkling beetles, fungus gnats, and tiny mites that spend their entire lifecycles within its woody layers.

Slowing Down for the Big Picture

When target insects hide from strong ridge winds, turning your macro lens toward the fungal ecosystem keeps the trail log moving forward. Finding this large polypore provided a great opportunity to lock down the shot, show the kids how fungi help clean up the forest floor, and record another essential element of Kubah’s incredible biodiversity.
